Lifeguarding
Become certified as a professional lifeguard by the only organization with over 100 years of lifeguarding experience.  The YMCA Lifeguarding Course is a nationally recognized lifeguard certification program that includes a more in-depth water rescue and decision-making skills compared to other certifying agencies.  Candidates must be at least 16 years old and be able to swim 500 yards continuously.  To pass the course and become certified candidates will need to pass both written and water skills tests. Course cost includes First Aid and CPR certification.  Must attend all class sessions.

Lifeguarding Recertification
This is a one day course designed for people who are already certified as YMCA lifeguards.  To take this course you must hold current certifications in First Aid.  Professional Level CPR and YMCA Lifeguarding when this class starts.  Participants will complete the written and water tests.  Call Melissa Leingang at 773-9622 to register and to receive a review packet.

Nationwide the YMCA has taught more people to swim than any other organization. The Miami County YMCA is committed to providing a safe and fun place for people of all ages, interests and levels. From adult water fitness classes and swim lessons to youth birthday parties and swim teams, YMCA aquatics programs mean fun.

We offer swim lessons for ages 6-months to adult as well as water fitness, arthritis programs, lifeguard certification, swim team and more.

Miami County YMCA Pool Rules

The lifeguard has the authority and the responsibility to exercise his/her judgment in limiting any behaviors he/she
deems unsafe or inappropriate in order to provide a safe and enjoyable atmosphere for all.

  1. All children seven years and younger and non-swimmers must be accompanied by an adult in the pool, at all times.
  2. Parents and Guardians are responsible for supervising their children.
  3. No one younger than sixteen years of age shall supervise children in the pool.
  4. Be respectful and courteous to others using the pool
  5. Walk at all times.
  6. Pushing, shoving or roughhousing will not be permitted
  7. When jumping into the pool, jump forward and feet first.
  8. Only unbreakable containers are permitted in the pool area.
  9. Please do not hang or sit on ropes or lane markers.
  10. Equipment should be used in accordance with its intended use. Equipment will be loaned out when conditions permit.
  11. Floatation devices are only permitted in the shallow end of the pool.
  12. Diving is permitted only in deep end of large pool.
  13. Use of the starting blocks is limited to programs supervised by a qualified YMCA coach or instructor.
  14. Any swimmer may be tested by the lifeguard to determine eligibility to swim in the deep end.
  15. Breath holding activities for recreational or competition purposes are not permitted.

Acceptable Swim Attire

A swimsuit is the preferred swim attire for all swimmers. However, it is acceptable for a swimmer to wear shorts or a t-shirt over their swimsuit for their comfort. Swimmers are not permitted to wears pants, including jeans, or heavy clothing such as a sweatshirt, in the pool due to safety while swimming. All attire should appropriately cover the swimmer and not be see through.

Acceptable Items May Bring to Pool

Members may bring inflatables as long as they are not so big as to impair proper visibility of the pool. Lifeguards have the authority to not permit inflatable rafts or tubes during busy swim times.

Members may not bring squirt guns into the pool area. Non-aquatic balls, basketballs, and items not made for pool use are also not permitted. Toypedos are not permitted in the YMCA pools.
