Scuba

The Miami County YMCA offers various levels of Scuba instruction. Checkout what we are offering currently in our brochure.
Beginning Open Water
Beginning Scuba Diving is offered to qualify swimmers who are interested in underwater diving. After successful completion of this course, participants will be ready to complete their outdoor Open Water Dive, which is the last step toward certification. For those who wish to continue, Open Water Dives can be scheduled locally or on special Florida diving trips with our instructor. The minimum age for this course is 12 years. Parents of youth ages 12-14 must be in the classroom and pool area during class, but are not required to enroll.

Checkout Dives
For students who want to complete their open water certification requirements. Checkout dives will be conducted at Hemm’s Quarry in Piqua, Ohio. Each weekend includes skin diving proficiency test, scuba skill proficiency test (“line” skills), and four “tour” dives. Divers should bring a sack lunch, if desired, and swim attire. Checkout dives will be conducted in all weather conditions as long as lightning is not a factor. If you are unsure, contact the Piqua Branch YMCA on Saturday morning. Rain checks or refunds will be granted anytime the YMCA cancels the dive.

Dan Oxygen Provider
This course developed by Diver Alert Network teaches the diver to administer oxygen in emergency situations. The course provides trainings in the care, maintenance, and safe handling of oxygen equipment, as well as the administration of oxygen.

"Dive the Florida Keys"
The Florida Keys is the premier dive location in the continental United States and the most popular dive site in the world. This trip has it all; great diving, checkouts for students, sightseeing, souvenir hunting, and great food Best of all, you will enjoy the great YMCA Scuba camaraderie. You will see great shallow reefs, shipwrecks, Christ of the Abyss Statue, barracudas galore, moray eels, even a few sharks (friendly ones only). We will do a variety of dives selected to meet the needs and interests of the group.

Great shore side sightseeing will complete the adventure. Visit Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville for one of those cheeseburgers in paradise. Also visit Mell Fisher's Maritime Museum for a glimpse of the Treasure of the Shipwreck Atocha. You can even buy a piece of the treasure. Seafood lovers will have some of the best food even. We will do all this and more.

Nitrox
Diving with Nitrox (enriched air) is considered by many to be safer and more enjoyable for the driver. Because Nitrox contains less nitrogen, dive times and depths can be extended without increasing the risk of decompression sickness. Many Nitrox divers prefer not to extend their depth and time, but rather enjoy the extra margin of safety afforded by the Nitrox.

This course will teach you the proper use, handling, and safety precautions of diving with Nitrox. Students must have YMCA Open Water Diver or equivalent and at least 10 logged open water dives. Students must also have complete understanding of dive tables. Successful completion requires two open water dives which will be arranged with the instructor. Successful completion of the course will result in Nitrox Diver certification, which will permit you to buy and rent Nitrox for diving.
